Weight Loss Contest Results Are In

In June, I entered the Church Tech Biggest Loser contest. Thirty-seven people from the Church IT and Technology world entered this contest organized by Jason Powell, Director of IT at Granger Community Church.

The contest ended yesterday and the results are posted here. I came in second place. I think I was in first place for a week or two. But for the most of the contest, I was firmly in second place.

While I would have liked to win the contest, I’m not disappointed with my finish. In fact, I’m pretty happy with it. In the past three months, I lost 25 lbs. This is the thinnest I’ve been in my adult life. I’m also pretty happy for the group. As a group, we lost 444 lbs. That’s awesome.

If you’re interested in competing in the next contest, please check Jason’s blog in October. He’s planning to organize another round at that time.

My Big News

Yesterday, I got on the scale and it read:

That’s right. It read 164 lbs. What’s the significance of this? It means for the first time in my adult life I am not overweight. My weight has now moved into the healthy, normal range.

I can’t believe it. After 18 months of exercising, eating right, falling off the wagon, getting back up, and still more exercising, I’ve lost 59 pounds! Praise God. It’s only by His strength that I was able to reach this goal.

How did I determine I’m at a normal weight? I measure my body mass index (BMI). If your BMI is 25 or higher, you’re overweight. Yesterday, it read:

Yep, 24.7. It was very gratifying to finally see the word, “Normal” flash across my heart rate monitor instead of “Overweight.”

How did I lose all this weight? You can read about that here. Right now, I am so excited. Here are some updated stats:

Weight went from 223 lbs. to 164 lbs.
BMI went from 34 to 24.7
Fat percentage went from 33% to 20%
Waist size went from 38 inches to 33 inches

In addition to being thankful to God, I am also very thankful to my wife. She has been very supportive and encouraging. I also want to thank all of you for your prayers and encouragement.

What’s the next step? I’m not done. There are a few more pounds I’d like to lose. It’s not essential to lose 3 more pounds, but it would be nice. I know I need to continue to work towards some fitness goal. If I don’t, the weight is just going to come back. I’ll be praying about what my new goal should be and will post it here in a few days.

Thanks for stopping by and allowing me to share my big news with you. Did I mention how excited I am?

Down 50 Pounds

Today, I reached a major milestone in my weight loss efforts. Through disciplined eating, regular exercise, and God’s strength, I’ve lost 50 pounds over the last 16 months.

The Background
I’ve struggled with being overweight my whole life. When I got married 13 years ago, I weighed around 170 lbs. Then, over the years, I kept adding more and more weight on. Sometimes, I’d try to lose some weight and end up losing 5-10 pounds. Then eventually I’d gain it back. In 2002, I lost 43 lbs, but then over the course of the next 5 years I gained it all back.

The Moment of Truth
In March 2007, I was pretty disgusted with where I was going. I didn’t care what I was eating and I wasn’t exercising. My weight had crept back up to 223 lbs. So I prayed about it and repented to God for the way I was treating the body He had given me.

What I’ve Been Doing
I got back on the treadmill and started walking for about 45 minutes a day, six days a week. I started to eat better as well. At first, I just tried to eat at Subway more often and cut back on the Big Macs. I’d had already given up on the soda back in 2003, so I was just drinking water, skim milk, or orange juice. By the end of 2007, I had lost around 40 pounds.

The Plateau
It seems that when I hit around 180 lbs, I’d hit a plateau. I wasn’t able to break through that point when I lost a lot of weight in 2002. So this time I tried to change things up. I cut back on the cardio work on the treadmill and started strength training. That didn’t work for me. In hindsight, I was not very disciplined with the strength training and I wasn’t doing enough cardio. So in June 2008, I changed things up again.

Here’s what I’m doing now
I’m just doing cardio now. I’m walking on the treadmill for 80 minutes, six days a week. I walk at 3.9 mph at a 5% incline. I keep my heart rate at 80% to 85% of my maximum. My Polar heart rate monitor says I burn 1000 calories per workout. I also do intervals 2 to 3 days a week. I’m not doing any strength training right now and probably won’t until I reach my goal weight of 164 lbs.

In addition to the exercise, I’ve also made a major change in my eating. I’m eating much healthier. I’m eating more vegetables, oatmeal, flaxseed and less cheese, sauces, and red meat. Here’s what a typical menu looks like for me:

Breakfast: Bowl of All-Bran Cereal with skim milk
Mid morning snack: Banana
Lunch: Turkey sandwich, an apple, a small bag of French Onion Sun Chips
Mid afternoon snack: Low calorie Protein Bar
Dinner: Grilled Chicken breast with lots of vegetables
Dessert: A small dish of frozen yogurt

The plan has worked. Since the beginning of the month, I’ve lost 16 pounds. I’ve blown past my previous barrier of 181 lbs. As of today, 6/27/08, I’m 173 lbs. I’ve lost 50 pounds!!! Praise God!!!

It’s been very exciting to see the weight come off. Here are some of the stats:

Weight went from 223 lbs. to 173 lbs.
BMI went from 34 to 26
Fat percentage went from 33% to 22%
Waist size went from 38 inches to 34 inches

None of this would have been possible without God giving me the strength and perseverance and for the encouragement and support that I’ve received from my wife. It’s my prayer that I can break the cycle of weight loss and weight gain. I’m praying that this will be a permanent change and the weight will not return. I’ll keep you posted.

Just 9 more pounds to go!

An Update

Life has been pretty hectic lately. It seems that as soon as we get back from one trip, we are on the road again. Right now I am writing this from a hotel room in Indianapolis. The family and I are on our way to New York to spend some time with my wife’s family. Indianapolis is the halfway point between Oklahoma and New York.I’m excited to see the extended family again. It’s been nine months since we’ve seen them. I’m especially excited to meet the newest member of the family, Ethan. He is brother-in-law’s newborn son. He just came into the world last week.

So what else has been going on? Well, effective June 1, I started in a new role as Technical Director for LifeChurch.tv. My team and I are responsible for all the audio, video, lighting, and satellite systems for all the church campuses. It’s a big job and I am very thankful for the dedicated guys I’m serving with.

So what else is going on? I have been working very hard to lose some weight. For the first six months of this year, I have not made much progress in my weight loss. So at the beginning of June, I decided to get back on track. I’ve worked hard to improve the quality of what I’m eating and I am now working out 80 minutes a day, six days a week. The hard work has paid off. In the last 14 days, I’ve lost 12 pounds. I praise God for that. I’m going to continue to work at this until I get to 165 – 170 pounds. With God, I know I can do it.

For the next few days I probably won’t have internet access, so I won’t update the blog too much. But as soon as I get back, I look forward to sharing with you what God’s been doing in me.

Where’s Sunny?

I’m sure that’s the question that’s been in your head lately. Where’s Sunny? Well, I’ve been sick. The reason for me getting sick lies solely with my children. It was their entire fault. I hadn’t been sick in years, but because of them, I was sick enough to miss a day of work last week. I was so tired last week and spent a lot of time sleeping. Hence, no blogging. But I’m back now and looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

One good thing that came out of this illness was my loss of appetite. Because I was eating very little, I ended up losing 5 pounds in two days!!! Now, I know what you’re thinking…oh you just got dehydrated, that was just water, when you start eating and drinking again, you’ll gain that right back. Nope…I don’t want to hear it. That maybe true…but I don’t want to hear it. For the next day or two, I will be relishing the fact that my scale says I’m 178 lbs. when I’m on it. Woo hoo!

Weight Loss Update

Did I make my goal of losing 50 pounds by the end of 2007? Nope. I ended the year with an overall weight loss of 41 pounds. I went from 223 lbs. to 182 lbs. Am I disappointed? Not really. My body mass index (BMI) went from 33.9 to 27.7. I went from being obese to overweight. My fat percentage dropped and my pants size went from a 38 inch waist to a 34 inch waist. I thank and praise God for helping me to lose this much weight.

Even though I’m very pleased with the weight loss, I’m still a little dismayed. By Thanksgiving I had made it down to 178 lbs. and was in striking distance of reaching my goal of 173 lbs. by the end of the year.

But December was a crazy time. That’s when I moved from Illinois to Oklahoma and I started my new job. With all the stuff going on, exercising and eating right were not in the forefront of my mind. Unfortunately, I didn’t stay disciplined.

But with the new year, I’m renewing my commitment to treating my body as God’s temple. I’m setting an ambitious goal of losing another 18 pounds by the end of 2008. If I can do that, I’ll have reached my ideal weight of 164 lbs. Will I make it? Who knows. But I’m going to try. I’m going to ask God for strength and perseverance and we’ll see what happens.

Down 40, 10 To Go

Today, I reached a major milestone. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve lost 40 lbs. Praise God. He has helped me to eat right and to exercise 5 to 6 days a week. I’m right on track to reach my goal of 173 lbs. by the end of the year. Just 10 lbs to go. Woo hoo!

What am I doing? I’m trying to eat healthier. I’ve cut back on the burgers and pizza. I’ll still eat them, but not that often. I’m also trying to take smaller portions. I don’t drink any pop (that’s soda for those not from the Midwest US). I’m not drinking as much water as I should, but that is my primary drink. On occasion, I’ll have a homemade chocolate chip cookie. My wife says she makes them for the kids, but I think she makes them just to torment me.

For exercise, I walk on a treadmill 5 to 6 days a week. I wear a heart rate monitor and try to keep my heart rate at 80% of my maximum heart rate. I try to burn 1000 calories at each workout. So over the past couple of months, I’ve had to increase my speed and duration. I’m now on the treadmill for 80 minutes per workout. Praise God for my iPod.

It’s going to be a challenge to keep losing the weight. I’m headed into a very busy season in my life as we move to Oklahoma. It’s going to be hard to stay consistent with the exercise and healthy eating as we are busy with the cleaning, purging, packing, moving, and unpacking. Never mind all the fattening food that’s readily available during the holidays.

Speaking of holidays, trick or treating for Halloween is this weekend. Where did my wife hide that Halloween candy? I’ll have to try some of it and make sure it’s okay to give to the kids. Gotta go…

12 Pounds in 12 Weeks

My goal has been to lose 50 lbs. by the end of the year. I’m so thankful for the weight that has come off so far. I have another 12 lbs. to go. With only 12 weeks left in the year, I will need to lose a pound a week. It’s going to be hard. As I come down in weight, my rate of weight loss seems to be slowing down. I’ve had to increase the time I’m on the treadmill just to burn the same amount of calories that I was burning a few weeks ago.

But with God, I know I’ll be able to do this. Feel free to pray for me as I work towards this. Through this process, I’ve been clinging to Philippians 4:13 which says, I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.

Treadmill working again!

I’m happy to report my treadmill is working again. The treadmill has been an essential tool for my weight loss plan. I’ve been trying to eat right and walk on the treadmill for one hour per day, six days a week.A few weeks ago, while I was working out, a bolt snapped inside the treadmill and the belt stopped moving. I knew what the problem was, but I couldn’t get at the bolt and fix the problem.

After spending $122 on a 5 minute repair call. The treadmill is working again and I’m back in business. I should have just been content that the treadmill is working, but I made the mistake of looking at the itemized bill. It cost $2 for the bolt and $120 for the labor. That translates into $1440 an hour. Not bad for replacing a broken bolt.

Praise God, I’m Overweight!

After five months of exercising six days a week and eating in moderation, I am happy to report I’m no longer obese and I’m just overweight. When I started this, I weighed 223 lbs and had a body mass index (BMI) of 33.9. This week, I weighed in 196 lbs and my BMI is 29.8. With my BMI under 30, I’ve crossed over from being obese to overweight. This is the thinnest I’ve been in four years. What am I doing to lose the weight? I’m walking on a treadmill six days a week. While walking, I keep my heart rate in my target zone for about 50 minutes. I’m also trying to eat healthy. I’ve cut back on the fast food and I’m trying to eat low calorie, low fat stuff. I’m doing pretty well on the eating part of this, except when, like tonight, my wife makes chocolate chip cookies for the kids.

My plan is to keep doing what I am doing. I hope to reach my goal of getting down to 173 lbs. by the end of 2007.  You can continue to follow my progress by clicking on My Weight Loss Progress page on the right column of my blog home page.  Feel free to comment if you have any tips or tricks for me.
