Welcome to Starbucks!

At the end of July, I began working at Starbucks as a barista.  That’s right.  For 20 hours a week, I’ll be making lattes, cappuccinos, and frappuccinos.

I’m still working full-time at LifeChurch.tv.  But in addition to that, I’ll also be working at Starbucks a few nights a week and on Saturday mornings.  We’re using the cash this job provides to get out of debt.  Dave Ramsey would be proud.

It’s been a challenge learning all the different drink recipes.  As you can imagine, there are a lot of them.  Thankfully, it is starting to come together.  The next challenge for me will be to remember all the crazy drink orders, like a half caf, triple shot, Venti 6 pump vanilla latte with whip, and figuring out how to ring it up correctly at the register.

The people at the store that I am working at are very nice.  They have been very welcoming and supportive. They quickly found out that I am the oldest person working there.  They’re shocked when I tell them that I’ve been married 16 years and have a 14 year old son.

There are several things that I am excited about with this new job.  One is to start to make some progress on the debt we’ve accumulated.  It’s been over a year since we’ve used the credit card, but we haven’t made a real dent in reducing the debt.  This extra income will help.  The next reason I’m excited to be at Starbucks is because I get to observe a world class organization from the inside.  Whatever you think of Starbucks, there is no denying that they are the leader in their industry.  I always like to learn how successful organizations get that way and stay that way.  But what I am most excited about is that I finally get to interact with people who don’t go to church.

Since I started working in full-time ministry six years ago, I never seem to interact with people who don’t go to church.  I work with Christians, hang out with Christians.. pretty much to do everything with other Christians.  There was never any point in inviting them to church, because they were already there.

It will be nice to interact with people who don’t go to church.  My prayer is that I will be a good representative of Christ to my co-workers and that I’d actually be able to invite them to church.

So if you find yourself in the Edmond/Oklahoma City area, stop by and pay me a visit.  I’m at the store on Memorial and MacArthur.

Incredible Week – Day 4

Today was the day.  Six weeks ago, it was an idea.  Five weeks ago, I heard about the idea. Today, Town Hall for Hope became a reality.  With all that happened today, it is going to take some time to gather my thoughts and post them here.  So for now, here are the pictures.  Enjoy!

The day begins with the sun rising above the TV truck and the generators.

Incredible Week – Day 3

Big day today for Town Hall for Hope setup.  The TV truck and generators arrived.  The auditorium chairs were setup.  There are 1717 chairs in the room, if you were wondering.  One the highlights for me was getting a tour of the TV truck.  It was very cool.  Here are some pictures from today.

Leadership Summit – Day 2 – Key Takeaways

Here are some of my key takeaways from the second day of the Leadership Summit at Willow Creek Community Church.

Session 5 – Craig Groeschel – IT: How Leaders Can Get IT and Keep IT
In this session, Craig talked about his new book IT. He talked about how some leaders and churches have IT and some don’t. He talked about how churches share the same systems, like worship and teaching, but they produce different results. The difference is IT. Craig doesn’t know what IT is, but he describes it as something in addition to the power of the Holy Spirit.

Here are some of the qualities of organizations with IT:
- Laser focus
- They see opportunities where others see obstacles
- Willing to fail
- Led by people with IT

In Craig’s talk, he also asked some important questions:

- What are you doing that you need to stop doing?
- What has God called you to do that you are afraid to do?
- What are you going to do to get it?

Session 7 – Catherine Rohr – Risk Taking, Barrier Breaking, and Bold Leadership
In this session, Catherine Rohr, founder and CEO of Prisoner Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) was being interviewed by Jim Mellado, President of the Willow Creek Association.

PEP helps prisoners who are about to get out of jail by training them to use their entrepreneurship skills for legitimate businesses when they are released.

In this session, I was impacted by how passionate and bold Catherine Rohr is when it comes to PEP. Am I like that with what God has called me to?

Those were my takeaways for the second day. As you can tell, I got a lot out of this year’s Summit. Like in previous years, I need to take a few weeks to continue to process through what God was trying to teach me.

I did like the changes that Willow made with the format of this year’s summit. It was great idea to eliminate the Saturday sessions. I’m looking forward to next year’s Summit.

Leadership Summit – Day 1 – Key Takeaways

I really enjoyed Day 1 of the Leadership Summit at Willow Creek Community Church. Here are some of my key takeaways:

Session 1 – Bill Hybels – The High Drama of Decision Making

- Turn enemies into friends

- Vision leaks. You need to keep visioncasting

- Facts are your friends

- When something feels “funky”, engage in it. Don’t avoid it.

- Leaders call “foul” when necessary

- Take a calculated risk

- “This is church” Don’t get caught up in the small stuff and forget about the big picture.

Session 2 – Gary Haugen – Just Courage: Charging the Darkness

- Lead things that are important to God.

- How to lead when it seems hopeless? Refocus on where we center our hope (God). If God is passionate about it, He will solve the problem.

- How do we lead when it is scary? Jesus came to, not make us safe, but to make us brave. Don’t go on a trip but miss the adventure.

- How do we lead others on the more demanding climbs? Choose not to be safe. Choose deep spiritual health. Choose to pursue excellence. Choose to seize the joy.

Session 3 – Bill George – Finding Your True North

The job of the leader is to:

- Align the people around a mission and values

- Empower the people

- Serve

- Collaborate

As a leader, you need to understand the purpose of your leadership. You need to know where you’re supposed to be. You need to gain self awareness. You need to use your strengths. You need to build a support team around you.

Interview with Wendy Kopp

I really enjoyed this interview format. I was very impressed with Wendy Kopp’s leadership style. Some key takeaways for me were to be relentless in my leadership and have a sense of urgency.

Session 4 – John Burke – Leading in New Cultural Realities

Our job is not to fix people, but to just cultivate the soil.

Efrem Smith

This pastor had a lot of great points. Some of the key ones for me were:

We want our church to be a sneak preview of heaven.

God wants to love the world through us.

Efrem Smith also spoke about our identity in Christ. Our identity is not based on our color, ethnicity, or any other external factor. We are all children of God.

It was a great day today. I look forward to Day 2 in just a few hours.

Leadership Summit 08 Begins Today

I’m sitting at kitchen table at my sister’s house in Illinois, thinking about the Willow Creek Leadership Summit that begins in two hours.  I’m really thankful that I can attend this event and be able to spend a little time with my family as well.

I’m not sure what God is going to teach me at this two day event, but I know that He is going to teach me something.  I’ve had the privilege of attending the summit for a few years now and have always been blessed by it.  This year, I’m looking forward to hear from Bill Hybels, John Burke, Chuck Colson, Brad Anderson, and my senior pastor, Craig Groeschel.

I’m also looking forward to connecting with some old friends, meeting some online ones for the first time, and making some new friends.

If you’re attending in Chicago, twitter me.

Multi-Site Production Round Table – Day 2

It was another good day at the Multi-Site Round Table discussion. The previous night, we had the privilege of having dinner at the Larry Osborne’s house. Larry is the senior pastor at North Coast Church and one of the pioneers of the multi-site/multi-venue church movement.

At dinner and the following day, all of us were able to get know each other a little better and deepen our relationships with one another. To me, that was the greatest benefit of this meeting. I was very good to just be able to get to know each other, learn a little more about these churches, and share our challenges and successes. It was reassuring to hear many people in the room were facing the same challenges that I’m facing.

Even though the gathering has ended, I hope we can keep the conversation going.

Multi-Site Production Round Table – Day 1

I’m in Carlsbad, CA attending the first ever Multi-Site Round Table discussion for church technical directors. This discussion is the brainchild of Dennis Choy, Technical and Production Pastor of North Coast Church, Jill Gille, Executive Production Manager of Willow Creek Church, and Daryl Cripe, Senior Director of Production for Grace Community Church.

I’m so glad that they chose to put this event together. Even before the event started, I was already realizing the benefits of this type of meeting. Before today’s first session, I had a quick bite to eat with Jeff VanderGiessen, the Production Technology Director at Mars Hill Church. He shared with me something that he does at his church that would really help at my church. Wow! I already had one great take away within 10 minutes of coming here.

We started off the session by discussing leadership issues, staff performance issues, and what was working well at our churches. It was also a great time to connect with my peers from 18 great churches all over the country. I’m excited about what God is going to do as we continue our discussion tomorrow.

What’s God Teaching You?

This is a question that I always ask when I’m interviewing a potential employee. I usually ask it towards the end of an interview. After spending an hour asking so many technical questions and questions about their work habits, I usually throw them for a loop by asking questions like this.

Last week, when I was asking this question, I was surprised to hear the same response from everyone. I was also surprised because God is teaching me the very same thing. I’ll be writing about it in a few days, but before then, I’d love to hear from you.

What is God teaching you?

Thanks for Your Comments about Customer Service

Raving FanThanks for sharing your good and bad customer service experiences here and on Facebook. You guys shared some great stories. I was able to use them with a book discussion I was leading at work. Our team talked about the book, Raving Fans by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles. It’s a pretty easy read, like all Ken Blanchard books. It has a real simple approach to improving customer service.  In the book the authors write about not just settling for satisfied customers but creating raving fans. If you’re looking to create some raving fans, I recommend you read this one.

Do you have some other customer service books that you’d recommend?
